1. Professional Service

I am an active member of professional associations. In my current roles, I am a member of the Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T) and the Association of Library and Information Science Educators (ALISE). I also belong to Special Interest Groups in both associations, and I serve as volunteer in the Severn-Pratt Award Committee. I attended the past two conferences of ALISE (2022 and 2023), I co-presented with Dr. Adkins and the team that I work with as a GRA on library programs for children with disabilities, and I plan on submitting a poster for 2024.

As a doctoral student member of ALISE, I have participated in several meetings of the Special Interest Groups (SIG). I benefitted greatly from the Innovative Pedagogies SIG work, as well as from the Pedagogy Chats presented in partnership with ALISE. I am learning a lot regarding LIS education, and I look forward to contributing some of my work in the future.

I have been a member of the American Library Association (ALA) since 2009, including several of its divisions. I was an ALA Spectrum Scholar while I was a student in the MLIS program, but one of the most impactful ways I was involved in the association was as ALA Emerging Leader in 2012. That appointment allowed me to work with the leadership of REFORMA to create a website and repository of resources for one of their programs, Noche de Cuentos. This work opened the doors of REFORMA’s scope of services, and it impacted my interests in serving Latino communities.

Through serving in REFORMA and later also in the Joint Council of Librarians of Color (JCLC) I connected with professionals from all the associations of librarians of color, which helped me in my research on services to diverse populations and the issues related to social justice. I am currently studying leadership aspects of the work of these associations, in the context of social movements.

Below is a list of all the memberships, appointments, and projects I was involved in:

2. Professional Presentations

I enjoy doing presentations at professional conferences, because I learn a lot from collaborating and discussing with peers. As part of my doctorate program, I have presented at the ALISE 2023 Conference with the team of researchers that I work as a GRA, with Dr. Denice Adkins. With my other GRA team, led by Dr. Hyerim Cho, we submitted a presentation to the iConference taking place in Spring 2024.

Attending and presenting at conferences like ALISE help inform my research, because I get to interact with the scholars in the field, hearing their findings first-hand and being able to ask questions. Many of the scholars who I cite in my studies are available in Conferences to share additional information and create a true scholarly community.

Previously, I presented at national, regional, and state conferences such as ALA, AASL, JCLC, and FLA, among others. I also was invited to be the “Alice G. Smith Lecturer” at the University of South Florida. Below is a detailed list of recent presentations and those prior to my doctorate program.
